Random Saturday

I tried the pink lady apple kombucha yesterday. Honestly it's not my favorite. It reminds me a little bit of hard cider which I never really cared for. It also is less fizzy which is part of the fun of kombucha. I definitely wouldn't buy this flavor again. If I run into a sale I might try another flavor from this brand but honestly booch is pricey and a real treat and there are just so many other options out there!
Pretty soon I won't be buying any booch! I finally made it to the DI which is a local thrift store. I found this glass sun tea jar with a spout straight from the 80's! It was a total bargain at $2.00! Most of the jugs I see like this are made out of plastic. Hopefully I'll get the rest of my supplies this weekend and start my first batch of homemade booch!
To continue with my week of comfort food you know I have to have some mashed potatoes and gravy. This time with some green peas! This is probably my all time favorite comfort meal.
Happy Caturday! Here is Afro proudly displaying her work on the couch. The other kitties scratch too but she is probably at least ninety percent responsible! And she wouldn't even look at me for the picture!

  1. Save your money on the Health-Ade Kombucha. I tried every flavor they offered, hoping for one to make up for the disappointment in each bottle tried. All flat, too vinegary and blah! This stuff is very pricey and not worth testing.

Brewing your own booch is the way to go! It’s incredibly cheaper, eco-friendly and you control the process! There are so many great booch brands out there, that even if you wanted to get one to compare with what you’re brewing, they’re so easy to find now. I brew my own booch too, but if I’m running errands and want something cool, I’ll splurge on a Revive, unless I see a brand I haven’t tried.

Great bargain find on that glass Sun Tea jar! I see many happy booch-filled days in your future!!!

    1. I definitely am not in a rush to try any other flavors. We just have too many options nowadays! I'm going to start my first homemade batch of booch today!

  2. Oh no, too bad you didn't like the kombucha! That is a great thrift store find though, I can't wait to hear how your homemade kombucha comes out! Your comfort meal looks great and hooray for Caturday! Hope your interview went well!

    1. I didn't hate it, it's just that I've had one too many hard ciders in my day and this really reminded me of those days.
My interview went really, really well!

    1. I love mashed potatoes too. I used soy milk for this batch, but usually I use canned coconut milk which makes them super creamy and adds that fattiness that we all want in mashed potatoes!

  4. Yeah, basically all the Healthade booch isn’t especially bubbly....
how exciting to start making your own!! I don’t remember if you have made it before but beware that it takes a while to figure out the right timing and amount of sugar and flavor to get it right. My first two batches were serious flops- but! Then i figured it out and literally have a dozen 16oz bottles of bubbly delicious booch every ten days or so :))

    1. I'm starting my first batch today. Aparrently I can't drink the first batch, it's just to make the scoby. But it should only take a week to make the scoby so after that I will be in business. I used to brew it myself when I lived in Erie so I feel pretty confident, but I remember I definitely had more than one flop! What are some of your favorite flavors to make?

    2. The thing is since you moved the timing of the fermentation will be different, but since you’ve made it before you will know what it should/shouldn’t look like.
I always make a ginger lemon flavor- i juice six big lemons and a big chunk of ginger. You can just peel the lemons and chop the ginger and blend together then press really well through cheesecloth or a sieve. That many lemons and ginger is enough for my dozen bottles, and i add a big pinch of sugar to each bottle and then let it do the second ferment which is just 4-5 days for me in the summer but my apt is warm lately. Takes closer to seven in the winter.
For other flavors i leave the booch plain for the second ferment and then just add a splash of juice when I’m drinking it- i experimented with other juices in the bottle for the second ferment and a lot of times that tasted great but no bubbles.
Oh! You can add a teeny tiny bit of cayanne to the bottle for the second ferment and i swear there’s some crazy thing that happens because it makes the booch crazy mega bubbly! So you can do lemon juice and cayanne, you would love that.

  5. They don't sell HealthAde here, but if it is not too fizzy then it kind of sounds like my kind of thing! I always have to let my kombucha go a bit flat before I can drink it. My body doesn't like fizzy drinks.

I can't wait to see your kombucha making adventures!

  6. Have you looked into online SCOBY starters for your BOOCH!? I have been wanting to get into it, too, but haven't taken the step. I know of a person who does her own...my buddy Opal! I wonder if she would be open to sending you and I a SCOBY starter!?

  7. Yey homemade booch! I hope you can get a scoby! I just started to make some again and the first batch is SUPER vinegary. I was starting from scratch, so I now have a culture started, so maybe I can pull the kombucha next time before it gets bad.

Supposedly using a jar like that is the best way to make kombucha. I've read that some people just pour the glass right out of the spout- though it wouldn't be fizzy (and it would be warm)
