Small Steps and Small Haul

There is a cat cafe here in SLC where one side is a room with cats who are up for adoption, and one side is a cafe with coffee, tea and pastries! From what I've read online some or all of the pastries are vegan!! Well the cafe just happens to be on the way to Trader Joe's. I stopped at Tinkers on my way to go shopping and left my phone number for the owner in case she ever is hiring. She and her husband come into the store I work at and so we've talked about this before. I really hate making coffee drinks, I was a barista several times in Seattle and uugghh, but at the same time I hate it less than cashiering. But also cats. And helping cats find their forever home. She didn't seem to be in a hiring rush if you get my drift. It's a pretty new small business so she's probably doing a lot of the work herself. But it felt good to push myself to do that.
As I was walking I came across this gorgeous tree. Does anyone know what kin of tree it is? I'm pretty sure I've never seen one like it before. It was very vibrant and cheerful as I was walking/melting on my way. Yesterday was one hundred degrees and here I go walking one mile to Tinkers and 2.2 miles to Trader Joe's.
As you can see my haul is very small. I took one step into Trader Joe's, it was insane and I couldn't handle it, so I grabbed the few things I absolutely needed and headed for the door. I decided to run into Smith's for a few more things.
I've been really disappointed in the produce from Trader Joe's lately. And a lot of the produce at Smith's didn't look the greatest to me either. I also was feeling depressed and just not into it so I definitely didn't do the greatest job shopping this week.
I did find Treeline cashew cheese on a WooHoo sale. It's my favorite flavor, garlic and herb. It's soooooo good. I love finding this on sale! Look at my poor shredded and furry couch in the background!

  1. Yey for a great vegan cheese sale!

Funny that you mention that you hated barista work. I've been working as a cashier lately, and thinking about how I missed barista work. But I think I mostly miss the smell of coffee at the end of the day. There are definitely positives and negatives. And from reading your blog, I can see why you didn't like it.

    1. I just idn't like making half caf, half decaf with a splash of this, a drip of that and an extra shot of whatever. I found it to be super stressful in thise moments when you had long lines and people were getting pissed. But I miss the smell of the coffee too!

  2. That’s great you out yourself out there and made the introduction to the cat cafe owner! And good lord that is really hot- iiick. I know you hate giving your work any business but that would be an easy way to get some produce when you need it.
Awesome find on the Treeline cheese! I haven’t tried that flavor before but the ones i have tried are fabulous

    1. Every now and again I buy produce from work like cilantro or green onions, but for the most part the produce isn't the greatest and also it's really expensive. I always thought that about that store even before I worked there.
If you ever see the garlic and herb treeline I highly recommend! It is so garlic-y and creamy. I can just eat it with a spoon!

  3. I'm so proud of you for going and talking to the owner of the cafe!! That is a huge step and I know it must have been so hard for you but it's so amazing that you put yourself out there! I know what you mean about dealing with a crowded Trader Joe's. It's the worst and the reason why I only go at 8am when they open.

That cheese was such a great find! Enjoy it!

    1. I used to only go to Trader Joe's in the early morning as well. It's so heavenly. I just can't get myself out that early with these late night shifts. The rest of the day is so hit or miss there. There are times when it slows down, but it always varies. Some days I can handle it, others it's just too much.

  4. I really wish we could get the Treeline cheese here! I've only ever tried a tiny sample once in the US but it was so good!
I will cross my fingers that something comes of the cafe!
