Trying To Be Better, Not Perfect

For anyone keeping track, on Friday I spent twenty dollars of my thirty dollar food budget at Winco, leaving me with ten dollars for produce. I found personal watermelons on sale for $.99 each so I had to buy two, and I also found buckwheat noodles on sale for $.99 as well. I couldn't resist that price, and I am seeing a cold noodle salad for dinner tonight!
I had some leftover Basmati rice and a slab of tofu that needed to be used so I made fried rice for dinner! Curry fried rice with tofu, green peas, and scallions. Because the rice was already cooked, this dish came together in like ten minutes.
This is not budget or zero waste friendly, but I read about this new vegan mousse from So Delicious awhile ago and kind of forgot about it until I watched a review on YouTube. The reviewer said it was almost like frozen whipped cream. She also said it came out soft and whipped right out of the freezer!
I found it on sale and I'm sorry but I had to splurge. I had the extra couple of bucks so I went for it. It is AMAZING. It really is almost as light as cocowhip, It doesn't have protein powder or artificial sweeteners. I don't care if this has one or one million calories, the texture is so amazing it is worth the splurge if you're on a budget!!!

  2. For someone who doesn't have a Winco to get the kind of deals you've been getting, what other budget places do you recommend for groceries?

    1. If there are any ethnic groceries in your area those often have the best prices- for example the mexican grocery will have cilantro for 50cents, and the regular grocery store it will be over $1. Just depends where you live and what options are available. If there’s a farmers market go at the end of the market, often stands will mark down produce really cheap because it’s so perishable and they don’t want to take it back

    2. Asian markets as well. Cheapest produce and tofu ever!
If you live near a Trader Joe's that's always a great place for value. Also Aldi is another great place. When I lived in PA an had no Trader Joe's or ethnic markets I bought a lot of stuff at Aldi.
Also lots of store have bulk sections even if they're not as big as Winco.
I liked Fred Meyer an Safeway when I lived in Seattle.
Check the produce section for clearance items, they're usually in red net bags.
I also watch someone on YouTube who does a ton of shopping at the dollar store! She finds produce, including organics and all kinds of amazing stuff!
      Hope that helps!!

    3. Great idea on going to farmers markets at end of day, that makes a lot of sense. I didn't even think about Asian markets or the dollar stores. I'll definitely try those. I wish I had a store like Winco where I could do all my food shopping for cheap. Thank you for all the ideas!

  3. The fried rice sounds fantastic! I love it when easy tasty meals come together quickly!
Watermelons here are already on their last legs, they got more expensive per lb and then the last one I bought was not very good at all- very upsetting! Such a score on those baby watermelons, hope they’re sweet ones.
I didn’t know there was such a thing as that ice cream- sounds like a great find, and on sale too :))
