Beware of the Clearance Stickers and Taco Tuesday

So last week when I was at Target, I saw a couple of Amy's frozen vegan breakfast burritos with a clearance sticker. I love Amy's tofu scramble hot pocket type thing, they used to fuel me in my nanny days, so I figured these were a safe bet. I didn't notice till I got home that they're gluten free, but whatever right? Well, as I've mentioned before I don't like saying bad things about companies that are making vegan food, but I also don't want other vegans to waste their money on crap, and I also absolutely do not want non vegans to taste bad vegan food and be turned off for life. The burrito is a tofu scramble, but they use different seasonings and I don't like them. But that alone wouldn't make me write a bad review, everything is not for everyone. But my main problem is that it has hash browns inside. Sounds amazing right? Well, they weren't cooked first, or if they were they were steamed or something so they're just like slimy shreds of whatever inside. This burrito loses on both taste and texture. It's also very small, and has a surprising 350 calories!

See how it just looks all gloopy?
The most annoying part is they weren't even that cheap on clearance, I should have gotten a Sweet Earth Curry Tiger burrito! If you see these, I suggest looking for anything else! I looked on the ingredients to try and figure out what the tortilla was made of, it seems sorghum flour and rice flour? The tortilla was not my favorite, but it was the least of this burritos worries.
Onto much happier food news, yesterday was Tuesday, so I decided to make tacos! I'm like so on trend! Ha ha. Anyway, I made some green chili black beans with smoked paprika, garlic powder, green chilis and nutritional yeast. Something I've recently discovered about nutritional yeast is that it goes really well with smoked paprika. It really brings out the taste. They're like soul mates or something. While the beans were getting all flavored and warm, I heated up a couple Gardein fishless filets and made a little spicy slaw, and made some super delicious fishless tacos! This was my best batch yet, all three ingredients went really, really well together!
I think it was the beans. I've made tacos with these filets before, but I just used the filets, and made a slaw. They were good, but I remember thinking they were missing something. I think they were desperately missing black beans!
I hope to get my hot little hands on some rice paper today so I can attempt the rice paper bacon that has kind of taken over the webz. I saw a picture someone posted on Instagram, and it looked terrifyingly real. I have many doubts about this phenomenon, but I also have some hopes so we'll see!
Happy Hump Day!

  1. I know what you mean about getting the wrong idea about vegan options and turning people off on trying other vegan foods! eeeek! I have some Vegan Finds over on my blog today along with a few other happenings :)

  2. I know I mentioned this on Instagram but I think it is genius to make fish tacos out of the fish less filets! They look so delicious! I'm definitely going to have to try this soon.

Honestly, I've never been a huge fan of Amy's products. I appreciate that it was one of the first companies to make vegan products but I think with all of the competition out there they would be motivated to create new products and to improve the ones that they have but nothing has really improved. I feel bad saying not nice things about a product as well but I think there are so many products that are so much better and I wouldn't mind spending the money on those… but to drop major cash on a mediocre at best product is very unappealing.

    1. You should, it was such a delicious treat!
I agree about Amy's. The only thing I really love from them is their roasted vegetable frozen pizza. But even that I don't buy that often because it's so expensive and to be honest not that filling. And it's also a huge calorie dump for not a whole lot of food. They have a lot of new stuff out, and they said they were coming out with a lot of vegan stuff, but so far everything new I've seen is vegetarian. I'm really disappointed in them. I agree too that there are just better products out there to spend money on.

  3. Bummer about the burritos! I remember having some sort of tofu scramble burrito from Amy's and it was pretty good. Maybe if you write to them and complain they will send you coupons or refund your money? They just seem like the type of company that would want to remedy a crummy product.

Your fish fillet tacos sound yummy. *rubs belly*

    1. I thought about that, but I had complained to them about that gross ice cream, and they sent me a coupon for a free item, which I used on a pizza. I think I'm just going to avoid their stuff, or at least stick to the few things I know I like. Even the things that I do like I don't buy often because they're so expensive.
The fishless tacos are my favorite way to eat the filets I've discovered!

  4. I HATE when it becomes clear why a clearance item was marked as such. But then it is also bad when something fantastic gets discontinued as well and you wish you had stockec up when you had the chance. You just dont know.

    1. I agree. I was scared these were going to be delicious, and I was going to be sad that they wouldn't be available again. I think from now on, when it comes to Amy's stuff I'm going to have a pass, or stick with the two things I like from them.
