Discoveries, Reviews

Yesterday was just what the doctor ordered for me. Sunny, and sixty five degrees or so. I needed to feel the sun on my face so badly! I've been trying to brace myself for the grey weather since before I even moved back, but for me, there's just no getting used to it. I am a sunny girl in my heart, and I feel like I need to make it a serious goal to live somewhere sunny and warm sometime in my life. Because of all of the joy I felt from seeing the sun, I felt inspired to eat very healthy, and very green!
The Micro Greens are okay, but they're no Alfalfa sprout!
I started my day with a salad and a Pretzel bagel with vegan cream cheese, scallion, and Micro greens. Thanks again to Vegan in The Vi for the scallion tip. Scallions and cream cheese are like peanut butter and jelly, they just complete each other. The Micro greens are okay, but I liked them better on the salad, they just aren't the same as Alfalfa sprouts. It seems harder to find Alfalfa sprouts lately. Was there some kind of  scare that I'm unaware of? The pretzel bagel was just okay in my opinion. The first pretzel roll/bread I ever had was from some place near my work In PA. I remember I got a pretzel roll and some hummus to eat on my break. This pretzel roll was EVERYTHING! It had kind of a crisp exterior with huge grains of salt like pretzels. The inside was soft and bread-y. The pretzel flavor really stood out even against the roasted garlic hummus. The Trader Joe's pretzel bagel is like a distant relative of that first pretzel roll. The texture is okay, but there is no real pretzel smell, or taste. I tasted a piece before I put anything on, and while it did taste different than a plain bagel, it didn't exactly scream pretzel. Can't win em all!
I also wanted to mention these little snacks I had discovered last week at Grocery Outlet. These are like mini rice cakes, or even a little like Pop Chips, but they're made out of pea protein! I had never heard of these chips, or this company before. They have that great crunchy texture, and a really nice BBQ flavor. I really love them, and I plan on looking for more at Grocery Outlet. From a quick glance at their website, it looks like they make a lot of interesting chips. This might sound weird, but these chips are super tasty dipped in garlic tahini sauce. Don't knock it till you try it!
I wish I had a picture of dinner, I made fresh spring rolls with a super tasty peanut hoisen dipping sauce from The Healthy Voyager's Global Kitchen. It was so healthy and delicious, but my spring roll wrapping skills are a bit rusty, and quite frankly I didn't even want my kitties to see them. They tasted delicious and all that, just weren't very pretty. One or two even required a fork! It's okay, I love spring rolls so I just have to practice, practice, practice! I filled them with rice noodles, cucumber, carrot, Romaine, baked tofu, cilantro and basil. Don't they sound pretty?
I also wanted to mention these delicious deli slices from Field Roast! I have never had the lentil sage flavor, and just like everything I've had from Field Roast, these are stellar! I had a few slices plain, so I could report on them. and they are delicious as is! I also see a super tasty sandwich in my future with some lettuce, Dijon mustard, and avocado! Yum.

  1. I've only had their cheese slices - I need to look into some of the fake meats eventho I'm not usually hot on them. This one sounds pretty good! Thanks for the post on it! I will be on the look out!

    1. I don't do a whole lot of fake meats either, but these are really delicious. I got them for a steal at Grocery Outlet, so I was more willing to try. They don't really taste like fake meat, they taste like lentils and veg, mixed with seitan. Really tasty.

    2. I like the fake meat that doesn't taste like fake meat LOL - like the veggie burgers I like are the ones where I can SEE the ingredients in them...like the veggies and grains. I don't care for the ones that are trying to look like meat...ya know!?

    3. I agree. I do enjoy veggie burgers like The Beast by Beyond Meat every once in awhile, but as a general rule I prefer veggie burgers made out of veggies and beans and grains too. The field roast slices have whole lentils you can see right inside. Pretty cool!

  4. I have had those Field Roast slices once, I think I got some in London and they were great. I know what you mean about alfalfa sprouts, my two local stores that used to sell them have stopped! Don't know if it's lack of demand or something else! Will have to try growing my own again.

  5. I know. I've seen people grow their own sprouts, and it seems so easy, but I also have a death wish for plants, so it was just easier buying them, they were pretty inexpensive, etc. I am going to do some research today and see if I can discover the mysterious disappearance of Alfalfa sprouts! I'll let you know if I learn anything!

  8. I think alfafa sprouts just go bad fast, so a lot of stores maybe sell out quick, or stopped carrying them because they kept going bad? There are few theories-
    1) Some people read that sprouts are bad because they have anti nutrients to prevent animals from eating them (and grow into full plants) but I think this isn't really an issue.
    2) There are some bleach and bacteria scares, like all the time. I remember hearing a bunch of people complaining the whole foods requires spout suppliers to bleach the spouts (like with pre-washed lettuce) because they are prone to bacteria. I know bacteria thrives since they usually wet, and some not so hot seeds can give the sprouts a weak start.

And I love those Field Roast deli slices! The mushroom is my favorite. Hearty, and mushroomy which makes it feel less "fake meaty."
