Pasta and The Beanstalk

A few weeks ago I tried red lentil linguini and was pretty disappointed. But I'm always kind of disappointed in long cut gluten free pasta. It's never as twirly as gluten full pasta. I decided to try the green lentil penne from the same brand.
There are so many bean pastas on the market now, and I see people raving about them but I have to be honest, I'm just not a fan. I've tried several brands and shapes and they're all the same.  For me it's a texture thing. Gluten free pasta is already less tender than gluten full pasta, and bean pasta is even less tender!
I made some basil and parsley pesto and tossed the penne with the pesto, edamame beans and sliced olives. Everything tasted great, I just don't like how firm the bean pasta is. It's almost hard to stab it with a fork.
For me, if I feel I want all that extra protein and fiber in my pasta dish, I'd rather just add actual beans to whatever pasta I'm using. Plus, actual beans are cheaper than bean pasta!!
The heat vent is Joan's favorite spot to sleep. Usually she can enjoy long naps with no one bothering her. I guess Kiki needed a new cuddle buddy because she is taking over the vent and forcing Joan to cuddle!!

  1. I know what you mean about the texture of those pastas. Eventho I'm not gluten free I still like to try the ones I find and I can relate to the texture thing! One of these days you/I/we will find one we like! It just might be WAY down the road LOL

Because Google+ is making changes I am still trying to figure out the best way to comment...sorry if it looks strange.

    1. The best textured gluten free pasta is Ronzoni believe it or not! It says on the box "tastes like white pasta" an they're pretty dang close! I've given up on bean pasta for the most part!
I am still confused by the changes with Google!!

  2. I've never tried bean pastas, they've never really been appealing to me and I'm glad to know I'm not missing much. The dish does look delicious though! Sweet babies, I don't blame them for enjoying nap time on the vent!

    1. You're not missing much at all! Save your money!! It was really tasty, and I'll definitely make it again with regular gluten free pasta.

  3. I haven't had that brand, but I do love the Explore Cuisine bean pastas. Some of them — like the edamame fettucine — are really soft!

    1. I've tried the black bean spaghetti from Explore Cuisine, but not the edamame fettuccine. I'll keep an eye out, thanks!

  4. Ugh what a disappointment!
I can’t remember if you have tried the lentil based pastas from trader joe’s but i am not gf and was surprised how tasty they were- and tender, I didn’t have a problem with it being too firm. I definitely tried the red lentil pasta (penne i think) and the yellow lentil spaghetti.
And if you hate them you can- and should! Take back the empty package and get a refund.
Definitely investigate the noodle options next trip to the asian grocery store- they have a ton that are just “accidentally” gf and will be really cheap vs buying pasta marketed as gf at the regular grocery store.
This recap of the various options looks super helpful- and sweet potato noodles are crazy amazing!

    1. I haven't tried any of Trader Joe's bean pastas, but I do like their gluten free pastas. I'll have to try theirs, because I know a lot of people like the re lentil pasta.
I love sweet potato noodles!! I definitely need to go back to the Asian market. You're right, somehow I never have a problem with gf Asian style rice pasta.

  5. Kiki is such a cuddle monster!
I made some gluten free spaghetti a while ago because my brother was here and he is mostly GF. It was such a gluggy, clumpy mess!
I haven't tried any of the bean pastas yet. No doubt at some point I will, for science, but definitely will wait for them to be on sale.

    1. She is! And she doesn't not care that she's intruding on Joan's alone time!
Gluggy is such a good word for so many of the gf pastas! And they're so pricey!
Definitely wait for a sale when you try any!

  6. I boil my pasta much longer than the package says, always. Maybe I'm unsophisticated. But "firm to bite" (al dente) just isn't pleasurable for me. So I know what you mean. I've heard some good and bad things about bean pasta but mostly I just notice how expensive it is so I haven't tried them yet.

  7. I like the bean pastas, but in certain situations! I am lucky to be able to eat gluten, so I can just go with flow, but I like the bean pastas in a noodle soup, where that sturdiness is needed. But I don't like taking European pasta dishes and subbing for the bean pasta.

  8. That stinks that the bean pasta was so firm, but the basil and parsley pesto sounds delicious! Kiki seems quite insistent on cuddles, haha!
