Trying New Things

Brown rice pasta, red lentils, coconut milk, green dragon sauce, frozen strawberries, tofu,Romaine lettuce, frozen riced cauliflower, onion salt, fruit frenzy bars
I picked up a few staples at Trader Joe's lately, and a few new things. I've been wanting to try the onion salt for a few weeks. It's made with granulated and minced onion, kosher salt and dried chives. I also got riced cauliflower because I am going to attempt to make cauliflower Alfredo. It's a risky choice because seriously I hate cauliflower other than the General Tso cauliflower or some version of that recipe. But every time I see cauliflower Alfredo it looks sooooooo good that I'm going to brave it. After my recent victory in what has been a years long battle with quinoa, I'm feeling feisty. It's still going to have soaked cashews plus lots of other flavorings to help it not taste like cauliflower. I'm trying it tonight so yikes!

I also picked this up to try while waiting for the bus. It was in the refrigerated section with the kombucha. It is soooooo good. The back of the can says it tastes like a cross between lemonade and limeade, and I asked the cashier if she had tried it, and she said it reminded her of something she had as a kid. Both descriptions are accurate. I Googled Calamansi fruit and it is a cross between mandarin oranges and kumquats. It's definitely worth a try. It tasted so good on a smoking hot day. And it's only seventy five cents a can!
The sign at Trader Joe's suggested using the onion salt on a burger, but I tried it on potatoes of course. Guys, it's pretty magical. It's onion-y and not too salty and just yum. I was thinking it would probably be amazing on corn on the cob, mushrooms and veggie burgers, especially a beast burger. It's really, really good.
Look at these lazy floof balls! It's rare when I get them all in one picture! The heat calls for lounging! Paper shreds in the background as usual!

  1. I love that photo of all your angels. When work is getting on top of me and I'm feeling down later today, I will re-visit it to cheer myself up.

BTW - those TJ frozen fruit bars look amazing! They look like some kind of "artisanal" ice-pop that someone would sell out of one of those gourmet food trucks at Smorgasburg in Brooklyn. All fresh, homemade and juicy.

    2. Incidentally, I assume that's your hot pink lipstick on the edge of the Calamansi Cooler can? Hubba-hubba - excellent color.

  3. Ooooh Onion salt, I am going to make the hour and half journey to Trader Joe's someday. Will have a list as long as my arm of things to try for sure, lol. Love the picture of all of your kitties today. I am not a fan of cauliflower either but I sauteed riced broccoli and cauliflower and zucchini squash in some earth balance with garlic and onion today and wow, can't even taste the cauliflower! I put the pics on Twitter, hope you can see them, one shows just how fat my white cat is, lol

I want to try a cauliflower fried rice recipe now. I made the sauce last night and I couldn't believe how I seriously did not taste the cauliflower at all!
      I saw your sweet kitties!

  4. Ha! The only way I can get all 6 of my cats in one pic is if I have the treat bag in my hand! They don't sleep near one another because, for the most part, my cats don't really like one another and just tolerate each other (except Gelfling and Polaris — they're buds). I must try this onion salt! Adding that to the list for my next TJ's trip in July!

    1. Treats are the way to get them huh!! My cats like each other most of the time, but they also like to move as soon as they see me trying to take a picture.
I swear you will love the onion salt, it's sooooooo good!!

  5. I'm really starting to think that Romaine Hearts might be one of the best deals when it comes to lettuces in stores. Especially stores like Aldi and such! You get 3 of them - I could average 1 a day! That's 3 meals for me! YUM!

    1. I agree. Besides iceberg I think it's the cheapest lettuce.

I love cauliflower, and have fun adding it in all sorts of things. I will be curious to see if the cauliflower alfredo is too your liking.
