Mid to Late Week Munchies!

Even though it's Friday, I'm going to still go ahead and consider this my MidWeek Munchie post. I went to a thrift store to look for a nice big blanket for my couch, and the thrift store I went to just happened to be close to a Grocery Outlet! It's been awhile since I searched for treasures, and I was feeling lucky, so I went for it! Much like thrifting, Grocery Outlet can be hit or miss. Well, lucky for me yesterday was a hit! I found a huge blanket at Value Village for six bucks! And it looks like my grandma knitted it for me!
As you can see, this is actually for the kitties, as is everything that I bring into this apartment! I love thrifting so much! I could spend hours looking in thrift shops. Luckily for me, Seattle is full of them!
This tea is a white tea with saffron, and I got it for under two bucks! It is flavored with passion fruit, and it's really amazing. he box claims that this tea is energizing, and helps with depression. I figured I need all the help I can get! I also found basil pesto Sabra hummus for $1.50 a tub! And who knew Sabra made tahini sauce? I looked at the ingredients, and it's tahini, lemon and garlic, same as Trader Joe's tahini sauce, which I love, but this was only one dollar! I also found Gardein black bean burgers for under three dollars!!! They also had the seven grain chicken tenders, mandarin chicken, and one of the beef style things. All for under three dollars! And I got a box of veggie stock for fifty cents!!!! I also decided to try the lightlife vegan sausage breakfast patty type things. They were like one fifty give or take, and I've never had these before. I mean, I am so much more willing to try things when they are affordable!
I knew I had one more picture of stuff! I got these raw macaroons in chocolate brownie for a steal! Usually things like this are way out of my budget!
If your into superfoods and all that, I would check out Grocery Outlet if you have one in your area. They have a whole aisle full of hemp seeds, chia seeds, coconut everything, noni juice, which seems pretty superfood-y, and all kinds of raw bars and supplements and just all kinds of random stuff.
I have to admit when I see the prices, it makes me even more suspicious of some of these companies, and also stores like Whole Foods. To be honest, even if I were rich, I wouldn't shop at Whole Foods. I don't want to be part of that whole expensive food chain, and only certain income brackets have the luxury of the best foods. I got a few things there when I first moved here, and I always felt broke and dirty afterwards. Anyway, I could go on for days about my feelings on the politics of food, maybe someday I will try to organize my thoughts into one clear post. But for now, I will just say that I heart Grocery Outlet so much! I didn't get the Chao slices at Grocery Outlet, but another grocery was having a sale, so with all the money I saved at the outlet, I treated myself. It's been a rough couple of weeks, and I needed the loving arms of Chao in my life!
All in all I spent like twenty five or six dollars, and I saved forty four dollars! That's my favorite part of Grocery Outlet is the end, when you see what you would have spent if you shopped elsewhere.
Do you like thrifting, and stores like Grocery Outlet? Have you shopped at Grocery Outlet?

  2. No matter what I bring home, it's for them in their mind! That's so nice! I love tea so much. Tea is to me now what coffee used to be. I attempted to do the linky thing at the end of the Mid-week munchie post, and I hope I did it right. Not totally sure if I did. I'm a little behind when it comes to technology.

  5. Hi Vegan Peace,
I too love thrifting and I am lucky to have 10 thrift shops within walking distance. I love them so much that most of my wardrobe comes from these shops and I donate a lot of my old clothing to them as well. So far I haven't seen my own clothing. Smile. How lucky you hare to have a Grocery Outlet with healthy foods like the ones you found. I have noticed that more of the supermarkets in my neighborhood are carrying a selection of healthy, organic and natural foods which makes it convenient and more economical for us. I have avoided WF for years due to the high prices, long lines and the fact that the hot and cold salad bar foods and soups are not organic. Eating healthy and organic foods on a budget is indeed possible. Cheers to you for your fabulous vegan haul!

    1. Thanks! I totally agree on you with Whole Foods. Even if I were wealthy, I wouldn't shop there based on principal.
Most of my wardrobe comes from thrift shops too,and also a lot of my furniture!
Grocery outlet is a great resource for anyone really! I can't believe all the healthy finds for so little money!

  6. That's my kind of shopping! I've been into thrifting my whole adult life. They are known as charity shops here as they are all run by different charities (including animal ones) but my sister in law who is a Queen of Thrifting calls them Treasure Shops :) Love that blanket. The food shopping sounds amazing. We have a few stores where you can pick up vegan bargains. They tend to sell stuff that's got about 6 months shelf life left so it's sold off really cheap. It tends to be just dried and tinned stuff though, I've never found anything like those burgers. You seem to have such a massive range of teas in the States too, it sounds lovely.

  7. I love the name Treasure Shop! That's really what they are. If you go to thrift stores in wealthier neighborhoods, you can find stuff that is totally brand new!
The dates are the one thing you have to be sure about with Grocery Outlet. Sometimes the stuff has under a month left, so it's best to use the stuff in a somewhat timely manner. They've even been getting more produce, including a lot of organics, so that's really great too.
It seems like lately every time i look somewhere there is a new to me tea! More people must be drinking tea I guess! No complaints from me!!

  8. Okay! You inspired me to check out some discount stores/grocery outlets! I have to admit I get a little lazy and just go to Wegmans each week, which is a mix of retail prices and cheaper prices. But I do go into a store with a strict shopping list, so I tend to stink at the whole "buy what's on sale" sort of thing.

I totally agree with you about the whole expensive health food thing. I use to think Whole Foods was pretty decent because it's prices were comparable to other grocery stores in the city. I bought a lot of their store brand foods, and bought my produce at smaller markets. Then I got to the burbs and was shocked at how expensive things were, and confused by why somethings were pricier there, but sometimes cheaper! There is a lot of back scratching and deal making going on. There was interesting article about the Whole Foods opening up in Detroit and it focuses on the gap in healthy foods for the poor. http://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2014/11/whole_foods_detroit_can_a_grocery_store_really_fight_elitism_racism_and.html

  9. Wow, can't wait to read that article, thanks, I love reading articles on this topic!
I shopped at wegman's when I lived in PA. and they do have good deals on some things, but are so pricey on others! It's maddening that food has become a class issue like everything else! Finding awesome deals at Grocery Outlet is one of life's small pleasures! I hope you find lots of great deals!
