Daiya Review!

Two posts in under two hours! I am a chatty Kathy today. I just had some of this smoked Gouda style cheese from Daiya with crackers as a snack yesterday, and had to share the love. I believe in balance, and I have criticized, and will continue to criticize daiya for not tasting pleasant cold. That is one of my favorite things about Chao slices, I can eat them alone, right out of the fridge.
Well, Daiya went and proved me wrong with their newish  smoked Gouda style block. It definitely has a smoky flavor, and it tastes great cold, with crackers, or dare I say even alone! It really is some kind of miracle! It has been many years since I've had real smoked Gouda, but it was one of my favorites, and this is very close to what I remember. Texture wise it's a little softer, but taste-wise it's pretty dang close. Life is getting exciting when daiya is starting to taste good cold! Woot woot!
I found this at a grocery called Safeway, and I haven't seen this flavor anywhere else, so it seems like it's still a hard to find item. If you happen to run across this, and if you liked smoked cheeses in the past, be brave and try this. Try it with crackers, and close your eyes and imagine a world where we can all have our cheese, and kindness too!
Have you tried this flavor of daiya?

  2. I know what you mean! It's even hard to find in Seattle, I've only found it in one store! It's sooooooooo good! Maybe if you request it at Wegman's , they might carry it. I requested Chao cheese at my local Wegman's, and they actually started carrying all three flavors!

    2. They were very nice when i requested Chao. If you do make a request, ask for the natural section or market, that's where they keep the daiya. I'm sure it will be good for the store, and i'm sure it would be a great seller because it really is amazing!

  3. 'a grocery store called Safeway' ha! That was one of only two grocery stores that existed when I was growing up. Wouldnt cross the threshold of one these days if I didnt have to. I have seen the Smoked Gouda at lots of other stores.

  4. That;s funny! Safeway is the only grocery in Seattle that I've seen the smoked Gouda! I'm sure whole foods carries it, but I haven't been there in awhile.

  6. I am by no means a fan of daiya, but this smoked Gouda is really tasty. I like smoked thins as well, and smoked Gouda and Mozzarella were two of my favorites. I hear you about the cravings though. When I first gave up cheese, I thouht I would never make it, now I can't believe I ever ate the stuff!

  7. Much agreed about Daiya being bad cold. I love daiya when melted on things, which made me mad when Buzzfeed did their vegan cheese sampling. They just ate daiya cold, and I cringed. They did the same thing with a "is it meat" video where people were all like "oh this clearly isn't meat" with Beyond Meat. Duh! Because you dumped it out the bag and served it!

Anyways, if I find the gouda I should give it a try. But so far it isn't at any of my local grocery stores.

  8. I agree about the Buzzfeed video! I always cringe when non-vegans do taste tests. They don't always have all of the facts, and they don't always know how to serve/prepare the food.

    1. yeah, they were blown away by the veggie grill. I think the problem with Beyond Meat in the video is that looking like meat and tasting like meat is totally different. I think half the people didn't even take a bite from it.

    2. I know! After seeing that, it made me really want to try the veggie grill! I think every one of the testers loved it and said they would eat it again!
