Forget Pumpkin Spice, I'm Having Tteokbokki

I thought I would post this video since you will probably not see anything pumpkin related on my blog. I'm so over the pumpkin spice everything. Last year was what did me in. Last year it seemed that pumpkin spice invaded THE WORLD. I've always been that way, once something becomes interesting to the masses, it becomes irritating and boring to me.  Veganism is the only thing that I want to spread to the masses. Mainstream veganism is the one idea that I embrace. Anyway, I love Hot for Food, and their pumpkin recipes are probably the best, and she made gluten free muffins for anyone with a gluten sensitivity.
I attempted to make Tteokbokki last night. I loosely followed this recipe. I didn't have dried kelp, so I cut up a few pieces of roasted seaweed and added that to the water. It seemed to work just fine. And I kept it traditional and didn't add any noodles. Next time! I also added some grilled tofu, because I noticed a few non vegan recipes had slices of fishcake, which actually looks like baked tofu. The rice cakes are dense and really chewy, I like the texture a lot. They're also very filling. I think it's compressed rice, they're dense in a good way. The starch from the rice cakes makes the broth get nice and thick and sauce like.

Spicy, salty, chewy goodness
I also saw a lot of recipes for stir fries using the flatter, oval shaped rice cakes. I'll be trying those next. These cakes are really tasty, and fun to cook with. Their like tofu in that they really soak up the flavors of whatever you cook them in. How had I never heard of these?
For dessert I had what has become my favorite candy bar in the world. I remember seeing a few Amy's candy bars in Seattle, but they weren't vegan. However, Natural Grocers has two candy bars that are vegan, and this one is THE BEST!
It's like a vegan Three Musketeers if the nougat were chocolate. This was my splurge, the one candy that wasn't on sale. The chocolate is similar to milk chocolate, which was always my fave. And the nougat is soft and sweet. If you ever see this anywhere, TRY IT!!

  1. That looks like a yummy dinner. Love the sound of the Amy's bar. I had no idea they did chocolate. We do get Amy's UK products so hopefully they'll introduce the sweet treats over here too! Hope you're having a good weekend.

  4. I have only found the coconut vegan bar by Amy's and I am not a fan of those type of candy bars so I skipped it. I wish I could find that nougat one!

    1. I have to be in the mood for the coconut bars myself. The nougat one however is a different story. I'm always in the mood for chocolate nougat. And the chocolate reminds me more of milk chocolate which always was my favorite.
