As I mentioned yesterday, Saturday was a bit of a rough day. I was sick in the morning, and then just felt blah and weak the rest of the day. I was in need of groceries, and while I could have made a pantry meal, when you don't feel well you don't always feel like getting creative. I've mentioned in the past that there are quite a lot of vegan restaurants near me. So I got take out for the first time ever in SLC! There is a place right by my bank called Shanghai Cafe.
Here is their menu if anyone is interested. I thought they were vegetarian and vegan, so I was a bit disappointed that they serve meat but I was already there. I chose a spicy lemongrass soup with rice noodles and tofu.
The broth was what dreams are made of. Why can I never make broths this good? It was clean and bright and spicy. Lemongrass is one of my favorite things ever. I love a lemongrass candle, broth, tofu, tea, however I can get it. And the soup had these delicious big pieces of deep fried tofu. I swear it's good that I have a fear of frying otherwise I would always fry my tofu and that would be bad.
Since I couldn't get groceries on Saturday, I made the very foolish decision to go to Trader Joe's on a Sunday. I have never done that in my life, and I never will again. Like I had anxiety just walking through the parking lot. Why do people think it's totally okay to have a four cart reunion in the middle of the already too small produce aisle??
I only got the very bare essentials. I could barely breathe. I was feeling guilty because I've been shopping at Winco more than Trader Joe's, but Winco is huge, like a warehouse with huge aisles and super high ceilings so you always have space to move and groove even if it's busy. For me it just makes shopping more pleasurable. I'll have to pick up a few more groceries sometime this week.

I feel like I belong, I've found Violife! |
I also had to go to Petco for some litter and food, There is a Whole Foods in the same plaza and look what I found! For the most part I choose to not support Amazon/Whole Foods, but I have been DYING to try Violife cheese and I haven't seen it anywhere else! All they had were the white cheddar slices which they were out of, and the smoked provolone. I love smoked cheeses so this is perfect! It was actually less expensive (4.99) than other vegan cheeses too! I've heard good things and I can't wait to try it!
The soup you got for takeout looks incredible! Sorry your Trader Joe's run was so stressful; I really want to go there sometime but I know I'll need to plan it out for when it isn't too busy so I won't get overwhelmed! Looking forward to seeing how you use the Violife!
ReplyDeleteIt was so great! The broth was everything! It is so easy to get overwhelmed at Trader Joe's. Never on a Sunday again!
DeleteI don't know what I'm going to do with the Violife yet!!!???
That Chinese take-out menu looks incredible! All those great veggie selections. Please definitely review the Violife cheese. I was trying to buy their feta online (I think it was Vegan Essentials) a couple of weeks ago but it's all sold out. Dying to try.
ReplyDeleteI know! I've been dying to try the Violife for so long now! They also had while cheddar slices but were sold out. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to do with them. Knowing me I'll eat the plain out of the package!
DeleteOoooh that soup sounds like the perfect cure for any sickness! Lemongrass broth can be so wonderful. I hope it was just an odd off day and you’re feeling better now :)
ReplyDeleteBecause i am an idiot i went to Trader Joe’s on Sunday night- not only was it very busy but they were also out of stock of about freaking everything.... never again!
That cheese sounds promising, one of my favorite things ever is smoked tofu from Soyboy brand, although i’ve seen it from other companies too. I love that flavor.

After the crowd I saw during the day at Trader Joe's, I can only imagine that they're wiped out by nighttime!
DeleteI love smoked tofu too. I get a different brand of smoked tofu at Winco and it is so freaking tasty!
I'm sorry you have been not feeling great. That soup sounds like just the thing to help you get better!
ReplyDeleteTrader Joes on a Sunday sounds like a nightmare. I hate shopping at peak times. Once I shopped on Christmas Eve, and never again.
Thank you, I am feeling better thank gourd!
DeleteUUUGGHH I can't imagine Christmas Eve shopping! I have anxiety thinking about it!
I'm sorry you haven't been feeling great and that your Trader Joe's trip was rough. That soup looks so incredible and comforting though, I hope that it helped soothe your soul a little! ANd hooray for Violife! I'm so excited that you found it! $4.99 isn't bad for that cheese at all!
ReplyDeleteYey for Violife! I have still have to give it a fair try. I had their blue cheese and it was so-so. I acknowledge that blue cheese is a pretty funky cheese so I have to try it's more "normal" flavors.
ReplyDeleteI don't really like supporting Whole Foods either, but I will be glued to their coffee stations. They don't charge for their plant milks, so yeah... everyone else needs to catch up!
