Going Basic

I decided to brave Trader Joe's yesterday. I figured the day after has to be a quiet day, even at Trader Joe's. Thankfully I was right an Trader Joe's was lovely. I was there around ten thirty or eleven A.M. and I was one of maybe fifteen people in the store. Heaven!
I also ran into Smith's for Cat food and found Lilly's red pepper hummus on a woohoo sale for $1.59 a container!
Potatoesx2,tofu,oranges,coconut milk, spinach,carrots,lemons,coconut creamer,refried beans,frozen strawberries,chocolate covered oranges pieces
My haul is pretty boring, or basic as they say. Two reasons, the first being budget, always budget. The second is that I have been relying too much on convenience foods lately and for many reasons I want to stop that before it becomes a habit. I'm going to be eating a lot of potatoes, juices and smoothies over the next few days.
I spotted this at Natural Grocer's yesterday. I stopped in for cashewgurt and vegan gravy mix. They were sold out of the vegan gravy mix but still had the meat flavors. That made me happy. I really wish I could have gotten this, it sounds amazing right?! But it is definitely a vegan luxury food. Remember the dark days when all we had was soy cheese that left a lot to be desired? Now we can have fancy cheese boards! I hope to try this one day. Has anyone else had this flavor? I bet it's like the fancy cheeses with the brine and everything!
I always say how hard it is for me to get a good picture of Etta. She is very camera shy like me. But this was an easy picture because she is feeling very proud and happy with herself. She stole my chair when I got up and it's all nice and warm!

  1. It's funny how far vegan cheese has come in the last three years alone. I remember in the dark days [before I was really on the internet regularly], buying a lot of really bad veggie cheese and then finding out that casein is a milk derivative. It was just so awful tasting and then to find out my good intentions and sacrifice were for naught! My first nut cheese was Dr. Cow, then Miyokos a couple of years later. Now the choices seem pretty limitless.

Love me some Etta. Her face came out very nice in that photo. I certainly hope she wasn't evicted immediately after you took that. After all, we are merely the servants of our cats. I'm sure you know that.

    1. I remember those dark days too! An I remember discovering that casein wasn't vegan was such a bummer! I went a few years just not eating cheese!
Etta will never get evicted. I just brought in another chair to sit on. I am a servant for sure!

  2. Good girl Etta, definitely an achievement to be proud of!
We got a few flavours of Miyoko's here for a while, including that one, but they were too heavy on coconut oil for me. I tried some of her other cheeses when I was in the US last, and they were super!

I've had the Miyoko's fresh mozz ball, an one other I can't remember which flavor. They are tasty just out of my budget most of the time.

  3. I’m confused about organic foods being vegan . If organic plant foods are produced with animal by-products, how can buying organic be considered vegan? Wouldn’t buying organic increase the exploitation of animals? I feel like it would, but I’m not sure. There’s generally no labels on produce that tells what organic ingredients were used to grow the food. I'm very conflicted on this issue.

  4. I love Miyoko's double cream chive, though it looks like they changed the packaging/design since the last time I got it, haha! Pretty Etta!

  5. Etta is such a beauty!! What a great picture of her!

Trader Joe's during down times is the best. I can't deal with the crowds there either so I know how nice it must have been to be able to shop leisurely and not feel stressed out by the crowds. Great haul! I really need to try Miyoko's cheese. I've heard so many great things. I really want to try the chive flavor first.

    1. Trader Joe's is really the best when it's quiet. It's just sometimes hard to catch those quiet times.
I want to try the chive flavor too. I want to try them all, but they're so dang pricey!!

  6. I would have been so tempted to grab that wheel, too, but for the same reasons as you I would have really gone back and forth about it. AMAZING you were able to catch TJ's at a semi-quiet moment! I know what you mean about the convenience foods I needed to cut back, too! I'm trying a few experiments the last couple of weeks when it comes to pain issues. I don't want to blog about it YET but will be soon - I hope!

  7. I wish I could afford Miyoko cheeses. But my husband got me her cheese making recipe book so maybe that is way of dropping a hint. XD
