This and That Thursday

This came in the mail yesterday! I still don't know who the VegNews fairy is, but whoever you are you are the sweetest and I can't thank you enough! I know I've mentioned how much I love to read and how much I love books, but magazines have always been a love of mine too. When I was a teen I read all the teen mags and then as an adult I switched to a deep love for the gossip rags. I used to love Fridays, I would go and get them all at once an just read them all cover to back even though most of them talked about the same stuff. I don't really buy them anymore because I can get my celeb gossip online, but I do miss turning pages. And I never can afford to buy vegan magazines because they are crazy expensive. Some of them I'm actually insulted by the price!
I made a special trip to Sprouts yesterday because they have avocados on sale two for one dollar!! And grapefruit are also two for one dollar! Sprouts is definitely expensive for some things, like a lot of the vegan convenience food is expensive, and of course all the trendy superfood-y, local artisinal stuff, but they have some of the best deals on produce out there. And they have a great bulk section including bulk spices. I got some crushed red pepper, sea salt, ginger, garlic powder and dried hibiscus flours. I also picked up some kelp powder because I've read that because of it's super high iodine content it's good for hypothyroidism. I haven't been able to find it anywhere!
Speaking of kelp powder, does anyone know how I should use it? Does it have a strong taste like seaweed? I guess I need to do some research.
I made this beautiful hibiscus tea with the dried hibiscus flowers. I love that beautiful color. I like to drink a lot of this in the summer because it's very cooling and hydrating. Hibiscus is also full of vitamin c, and it helps lower blood pressure! I've also read that it's healing for the liver, and I'm always trying to show my liver love after all of my past abuse.
Little Buddy update, I'm still opening my door every morning and letting him come in and wander around. He's getting braver, but he still chooses to go back outside. It's so hard to not just close the door because I want him to be warm and safe. But I'm not a zookeeper and he needs to not feel forced or captured. So we will continue this journey and see where we end up. At least he gets to warm up for awhile while he's inside.

  1. Hey there...if you ever make faux "tuna" salad using chickpeas, the kelp powder is a great addition because it adds a flavor of the sea. Since tuna salad was my all time favorite food in my pre-veg days, the chickpea tuna salad has been a life saver for me. Hope that helps.

    1. That does help so much. I love chickpea salad, and I was also wondering if it had that flavor of the sea. You actually answered two questions for me, thanks!!

  2. Oooh I'm so glad the VegNews fairy paid you visit! What a great surprise to have show up. That's a great haul and I love all of the great prices you scope out. I don't know why I can never seem to find awesome deals but I'm going to keep looking! The tea is such a gorgeous color!!

    1. It's embarrassing to admit this, but I do look at the annoying weekly ads that come in the mail. That's how I know when Sprouts has the super sales! But a lot of the deals I kind of accidentally find. Like I always check the clearance section along with the other grandmas! Ha!

  3. Just be careful with the kelp powder. I remember reading you CAN overdo iodine. It is hard, but more common with too much seaweed since it is so high in iodine. I think I remember reading a few fishy inspired recipes using kelp powder. I always just used whole dried seaweed because I could never find the stuff.

I love magazine too but specialty mags are SO EXPENSIVE! I use to get them for stockings for family, and when looking at the gluten-free and wine magazines (my mom wants to go gluten-free, and my Dad works for a wine shop) they were at least $10 each! Yikes! I could buy an entire gluten-free cookbook instead! No thanks!

    1. I saw a recipe for kelp tea!I cannot imagine drinking something kind of fishy as tea! I'll stick to chickpea salad!!
That's why I don't ever buy magazines! I can't afford to. I looked at the Forks over Knives magazine and I'm pretty sure it was ten dollars. I've even seen a magazine that was fifteen dollars. It's ridiculous!!

    2. I partly get it. There has beens some beautiful magazines, and they pretty much making a book every month, and they need to pay staff, writers, etc. Plus I think the internet is making magazines less relavent and therefore they have to charge more to make up the cost. You should keep an eye out at your library, I know mine does magazine sales every year or so. They clear out their stock, which you could snag some vegan mags easily.

  4. I was always a huge magazine junkie!! Actually makes me a bit sad they aren’t as relevant any more, i was always soooo thrilled to get a new issue!
What crazy awesome sales sprouts has! And so great to get bulk spices. Kelp powder isn’t something i have used much but i do love all seaweed. You could add some to your rice when cooking it for a sushi bowl, or add some to soup with miso for a flavorful broth

  5. Vegan magazines are SO EXPENSIVE! I am glad you have a VegNews fairy!
I used to read Dolly and Girlfriend when I was in high school, then switched over the Cleo and Cosmo. Magazines are fun to read, but I never buy any these days. I used to occasionally buy one to read on a plane, but now I take my kindle.
